We’re beyond excited to announce a new Punchlist integration with Slack, to add even more speed to your feedback workflow.
If you’re the kind of person who wants to have godlike visibility into everything that’s happening on your projects, and avoid having to double efforts by “over-communicating” (copy-and-pasting the same thing in different tools), then this Slack automation is for you.
Now you can be the first to know when feedback is coming in. All from the comfort of Slack.
Why integrate Slack with Punchlist?
- Instant Visibility: Get notifications of new Punchlist comments in the Slack channel(s) of your choosing.
- Quick Collab: Auto-create a Punchlist project from any Slack channel with the /punchlist keyboard shortcut.
- Convenience: You’re already on Slack every day anyway. This is where work is happening. And Punchlist can just augment that to speed up your workflow, from the comfort of your existing Slack workspace.
- Hyper-Specific Feedback: Slack notifications link back to specific comments in Punchlist, so you can get really granular, and know exactly what they’re talking about – with less back-and-forth.
- Compartmentalize: You can set up dedicated channels per Project, to keep everything organized. Perfect for managing multiple brands or juggling multiple projects.
Slack is where work is happening. And Punchlist is a layer over your creative work. With 10+ million daily active users on Slack, it only made sense for Punchlist to integrate with it.
How to set up the Slack integration with Punchlist
- Create a new project in your Dashboard
- Go to Settings in the top right (on the Project level)
- Click Add an integration OR Edit project details (both work)
- Under Notification Settings, click Add to Slack (you’ll see the Slack logo)
- Don’t worry, you can always remove this at any time. And re-integrate Slack with a different Project.
Worth noting that this doesn’t integrate Slack with ALL of your projects, so you can keep things organized on a per-project basis.
The Punchlist-to-Slack integration works for:
- Immediately seeing feedback when it comes in, directly in Slack
- Having specific Slack channels for specific clients / brands
- Separating your Slack channels based on types of creative work (e.g. #design, #website)
- Organizing your Punchlist projects per-channel
- Creating a dedicated Slack channel for collaborating on a particularly meaty project
Ok now that you’ve clicked the next step to add the Slack integration – which just gives the two apps permission to talk to each other – now you’re ready to customize it to your needs.
- On this next screen, again scroll down to Notification Settings – the same place you clicked before – only now it’ll become a dropdown menu.
- From the dropdown menu, select whichever Slack channel you want the Punchlist notifications to appear in.
Later I’ll show you some other cool keyboard shortcuts so that your integration can work both ways – have Slack talk to Punchlist, just like Punchlist talks to Slack.
For now, let’s just click the channel you want from the dropdown, then make sure you scroll down to Save Project.
Voila! You’re ready to start commenting just like any other Punchlist project – the main difference now is, your feedback will ping your Slack channel, with links back to those individual comments, to make it super easy for your team to collaborate and work through all the feedback and get really granular – seeing exactly what they are talking about.
From here, you can take it even further:
- You can thread comments inside Punchlist, if you need to discuss a specific piece of feedback (Note: sub-comments won’t ping Slack.)
- You can even thread comments inside your Slack notifications, if you so choose – I don’t know what your Slack workflow is like, but this just gives you some more options.
Within this Punchlist “comment view,” you can see:
- Screenshot of the area in question
- Browser details
- Screen size
- And any other context that your teammate or client might’ve attached
For example they can upload their own visual reference to the comment, if there’s an image that needs replacing. Things like that.
This is all stock standard in any Punchlist account.
Now, you can just make your workflow even more synced up, and see where things are at across your team – conveniently from your Slack workspace.
Then of course, if you click out of the comment level, you’re back to your Punchlist project, where you have all the different features and options for organizing your feedback; viewing comments in different ways; toggling mobile / desktop / tablet view; sorting comments by “Done” or “Incomplete”; and all the other features we’ve built for you to get your work done more effectively.
Bonus feature: Slack keyboard shortcut
Next, I’ll share with you one of my favorite little Slack hacks with this Punchlist integration.
Who doesn’t love a good keyboard shortcut?
I find these things just lighten my cognitive load and reduce switching costs, which makes my brain feel better at the end of the day.
Here’s how it works:
- While you’re using Slack, pop into ANY channel, and simply type /punchlist then the full URL you want to create a project around.
- Punchlist will automagically create a project for that website, so you can quickly mark it up or share with your team, and skip a few clicks.
Good uses for this Slack shortcut are:
- QA / reviewing live websites
- Proofreading live web content
- Sharing a blog article URL that needs specific changes
- Quickly checking how a website looks across mobile, tablet and desktop
No need to wait around, or switch between different apps and forget what you were about to do in the first place. Just type /punchlist then the URL, and boom – you’ve got a Punchlist project ready to share for feedback and markup.
This is just one of the many new features we’re adding to Punchlist to save you time, help you get projects done more efficiently, and free up your brain to focus on what matters.
